Pink shirt day
Bullying is a terrible experience for children. They are at most risk in school, where large numbers of children mix, with few adults to regulate interactions. It is hard for children to tell on a bully. Keep regular checks on your child and note any changes in behaviour. Telling him/her to walk away, toughen up, ignore or stand up to bullying often doesn’t help. We need to be aware of what’s happening and to handle the problem as the adults. Some children do not read social situations well, and fail to see the warnings and lack of invitation. We need to help them to develop strategies for making friends and staying safe. We also need to address bullying with the bully and his/her family. The best thing that children can do is to speak out when they see someone else being bullied. Standing by, silently watching is a betrayal of trust. We’re all scared of bullies but they only have power when we remain silent.
